KUALA LUMPUR (Dow Jones)–Malaysia will have to spend an estimated MYR45 billion a year to subsidize retail fuel prices, assuming crude-oil prices remain between $110 and $120 a barrel, Second Finance Minister Nor Mohamed Yakcop said Wednesday.

‘At this point, the subsidy cost is MYR45 billion,’ he said. Of this, MYR25 billion will be in the form of direct subsidies from the government, and the remaining would be absorbed by state oil company Petronas. He said the government has ‘no cap’ on the amount of subsidies it will absorb.

Nor Mohamed said that the government will continue to monitor global fuel prices to ensure that there is minimal impact on the man in the street.
